Trauma/PTSD
I find the best way to work with trauma is to identify triggers and start to cope with the negative thoughts and feelings that come up when they are reminded of the traumatic event. Then specific skills are implemented when they encounter a trigger or are experiencing a trauma response. These skills include decreasing the body's threat signals to signals of safety by incorporating relaxation and mindfulness techniques. When a client feels in control of their triggers and their trauma responses are coming up less, then they have the option to create a narrative of their traumatic event to desensitize themself further. This is not a required part of therapy and most people do just fine with learning to manage their trauma responses.
